Anonymity, Content Management and Zero Footprint Technology will Impact the Digital Landscape in 2012
Key Ideas
Anonymity
At a recent talk at the Web 2.0 Summit, 4chan founder Christopher Poole (aka “moot”) explains how Google and Facebook “do identity wrong,” and that people should not be tied to just one identity on the web.
Poole explains, to some people, he’s a son, and to others he’s a hacker or a friend. Identity is more complex than the world’s largest social networks would like you to believe. “We all have multiple identities,” he declared. “It’s part of being human. We’re all multi-faceted people.”
Poole concluded with his thoughts on how the world’s largest social networks are handling identity. “Facebook and Google do identity wrong, Twitter does it better, and I want to think about what the world would be if we did it right” …Click to watch
Content Management being monetized
Initially organizational content such as documents, videos, web based applications, mobility applications were delivered only through traditional technologies. The boundaries between e-commerce and content management are shrinking and companies are thinking in terms of how their content can be delivered across various devices and how this delivery can be eased creating a business value out of it. Hence companies are putting focus on how content can be managed within the organization, how it can be distributed and how it can be monetized throughout the world.
Digital Asset Management (DAM) systems to the cloud. Unlike server based systems, that require dedicated servers to house their software, A browser based system that stores digital assets, with redundancy for security on the cloud, represents a big opportunity moving forward.
Zero Footprint Technology
In sectors that are concerned with confidential data or regulatory compliance etc where security is key, we are seeing the use of zero footprint applications whereby the application doesn’t save any data, code, link, history, and temporary files etc on the device. Zero footprint applications run on web based servers and can be accessed on either a traditional PC or a mobile device such as tablets etc. Zero footprint technology will see an increased adoption in 2012.
The “Bring your own device” movement
With the increasing accessibility to and affordability of mobile devices like smart phones, tablets and laptops, bringing technology to the workplace is definitely an upcoming trend. This is in-line with the global trends of “Consumerization of IT” and “Bring Your Own Device”. In today’s cloud era, the PC-server environment will undergo a change transforming the future of business by redefining the workplace.
Content is King.
2012 will mark a surge in businesses not only being the publishers of their own content, but [being] disseminators as well. Whether it’s a company blog or a corporate e-newsletter, businesses will focus on creating the content and developing their own publishing vehicles to get their messages to market. They will bypass traditional media outlets and go directly to their target audiences by creating branded niche media properties.
